Last Saturday, just right after the full moon, Bali was celebrating the presence of Saraswati, the Goddess of science and art present in their lives... the whole male population of Bali dressed in all white (ladies have more choice in respect of the color and style of the dress as usual - you know how ladies are, we never want to wear the same.. :) once all dressed up from the smallest kids to the oldest man everyone was going to the temple to proceed with the ceremony... to celebrate the Goddess of science and art...
People gather together in the temples pray and say mantras together to show the respect they have for the different elements of the universe... God of Fire, Water etc. First they meditate to clear their head then they say the different prayers for the different Gods who are actually different faces of the one eternal God, then they ask for the things they need... I was asking for inner peace... :)
According to the oldest traditions after praying in the temple people gather together, eat and drink and keep up until the sun comes out, then with the first sunlight they go into the ocean to bath and to finish the purification. I have to admit that after a whole day surfing I had fallen asleep no matter how hard I tried to be awake... anyway I still went to the beach to not only spiritually but psychically clean myself... I expected a holy community meditating and going into the water in arranged rows... instead I have found the most lively beach crowd, playing laughing in the water at 6 in the morning... I loved it, it was so much alive, it was life itself! The Balinese live their believes in the most natural way possible, no artificial surroundings, just pure life... they surrounded me with huge smiles when I joined them in the water! And you know what... the purification was even more successful living it such a lovely way!
